Production for the latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise is seemingly in first gear if its lead star should be believed. Acclaimed actor Vin Diesel offers a progress update about Fast X: Part 2 amid conflicting reports of the sequel’s status.
Via his Instagram page, Diesel shared an apparent set photo from Part 2, which showcases a black Chevy Chevelle driving between another classic car and a camera vehicle. Diesel’s central character, Dominic Toretto, drove the vintage Chevy in previous Fast & Furious movies, confirming that those on the pictured track were “filming practical exteriors” and that the visuals brought back “beautiful memories” of the first movie, 2001’s The Fast and The Furious.
Diesel has been teasing bits and pieces from the making of Part 2, including behind-the-scenes images featuring his on-screen protagonist and confirming the Fast & Furious franchise’s return to a familiar track from past installments. Diesel also confirmed the upcoming Fast X follow-up will feature a tribute to fallen co-star Paul Walker and his beloved character, Brian O’Conner, with Brian’s iconic Supra from the earlier films set to appear.
Fast X’s Cliffhanger Will Be Resolved
Making the Fast & Furious franchise finale, Part 2 continues from Fast X‘s cliffhanger ending, which teased Dom’s fate and more potential Fast family casualties after Jason Momoa’s villain, Dante Reyes, wreaked havoc in the last sequel. Part 2 will depart from the typical themes of recent Fast & Furious movies that had audiences suspending their beliefs, moving from its more outlandish traits and returning to the street racing roots that made the film series popular among critics and fans. Part 2 is also expected to feature a smaller budget after Fast X cost $340 million, and will reportedly feature a new villain.
While Diesel’s updates suggest principal photography for Part 2 is underway, co-star Jordana Brewster, who plays Dom’s sister and Brian’s wife, Mia Toretto, recently offered a more frustrating update. Brewster stated he hadn’t received any filming updates, telling Screen Rant, “I don’t have a timeline. I’m usually — I mean, I’ll probably read it online, or I’ll try to, try to get some information out of Vin. But, no, I don’t know yet. But hopefully soon.” Fellow franchise star Tyrese Gibson also claimed the Part 2 script hadn’t been completed, though he’s optimistic filming will commence in 2025.
Fast X earned mixed reviews (56% on Rotten Tomatoes) following its release, though the $715 million it made at the global box office helped the Fast & Furious franchise boost its status as Universal Pictures’ highest-grossing franchise (over $7 billion). Along with the Louis Leterrier-directed Part 2, a spinoff movie featuring Dwayne Johnson’s returning lawman character, Luke Hobbs, was announced and is supposed to be set between Fast X and Part 2. However, there’s been no update since the announcement.
Part 2 is expected to make its theatrical debut in 2026.
