Students studying medicine in the US must adopt a somewhat different strategy than in other nations.
Medical degrees are generally only available at the postgraduate level and require five years. Students may pursue “pre-med” courses in health and science as an undergraduate. Students then apply to “post-med” or MD school.
Most colleges provide undergraduate course recommendations and major and minor programs to launch medical careers. University recommendations differ, but science and math courses are recommended.

5. Pennsylvania University
Perelman School of Medicine is Penn’s medical school. It is one of the nation’s oldest medical schools.
Penn Medicine Princeton Health and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania are among six associated hospitals.
School departments include genetics, microbiology, neurology, emergency medicine, surgery, radiology, and others.
The school offers MD, PhD, master’s, and continuing medical professional development programs but not undergraduate programs.
4. Yale U
Yale University’s medical school provides MD and PhD programs for medical students.
The Yale School of Public Health provides public health courses and collaborative degree programs with other universities.
In their first 18 months of medical school, all students complete a clinical skills course that teaches them how to deal with patients and the doctor-patient relationship. The school thinks all future practitioners should receive basic palliative and end-of-life care training.
Yale offers a global medicine credential alongside its programs.
The medical school emphasizes research and demands unique research dissertations. The institution encourages many students to seek a fifth year of medical school for research.
3. Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University offers MD, graduate, PhD, and fellowship programs.
An undergraduate major in medicine, science, and the humanities studies medical and health history at the institution.
Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland is named after the benefactor who financed a hospital for all ages, races, and sexes. The Johns Hopkins Hospital opened in 1889, and the School of Medicine four years later.
University teaching follows the “Genes to Society” curriculum, which “presents a model of health and disease based in the principles of adaptation to the environment, variability of the genotype and stratification of risk” rather than treating them separately.
The Johns Hopkins Medical School was one of the first US medical schools to accept women in 1893.
2. Stanford U
Stanford Medical School has three institutions: Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children’s Health.
The Undergraduate Research Programme allows biomedical research by undergraduates.
The school provides MD, PA, and PhD programs. In 2016, the MD program added pathophysiology and pharmacological illness therapy modules to the Discovery Curriculum. This program integrates organ-based learning with patient-centered care. Students may customize their courses depending on their interests.
Undergraduates have several options in the School of Medicine. Introductory seminars, an emergency medical technician program, community health classes, and biology and human biology undergraduate courses are examples.
1. Harvard U
Harvard’s medical school, founded in 1782, is the third oldest in the US.
The medical school’s five-year MD curriculum may be extended by a year for another degree, research, or courses.
Harvard has no undergraduate “pre-med” focus. Biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, biochemistry, and English are required before enrolling to medical school, although there is no fixed curriculum.
Benjamin Waterhouse, a professor at Harvard Medical School, presented the smallpox vaccine to the US in 1799. Harvard maintains ties with 15 top hospitals, enabling students and staff to interact globally.
