The Riddick: Furya release date has not yet been announced. However, the upcoming sci-fi movie is starting to pick up steam (more on that in a bit), so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see the return of Richard B. Riddick at some point on the 2025 movie schedule. You may like

Over the years, everyone from Yellowstone star (and 2 Fast 2 Furious villain) Cole Hauser to Dame Judi Dench to wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista have popped up in the Riddick franchise. And while it’s very likely Riddick: Furya will also feature some top-tier talent when it hits the big screen, as of right now, only Diesel’s titular character has been revealed.

The long-awaited return of Riddick, the highly-skilled mercenary with a history of incredible and daring adventures, was revealed by Deadline in February 2023 at the same time that the fourth installment in the franchise was announced. Expect to hear more about the other members of the cast in the weeks and months to come.

When the film was announced in February 2023, Variety announced that the fourth installment in the action sci-fi franchise would follow Riddick as he finally returns to his homeworld of Furya. He fears it could have been left in ruins by the Necromongers, the group of religious fanatics who brought death and destruction wherever they went in 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, and who later reluctantly included him in their ranks nearly a decade later in Riddick. But that could be the least of his troubles, as he will soon discover a new threat, one that could wipe the Furyan race from existence.

Franchise Creator David Twohy Has Said The Upcoming Sequel Will Explore ‘Riddick’s Genesis’

Though it sounds like Riddick: Furya will take place following the events of the previous movies in the franchise, comments made by franchise creator David Towhy, who is returning to write and direct the sequel, in February 2023, make it sound as if we’ll finally get more backstory for Vin Diesel’s character. In a statement released alongside the movie’s announcement (via The Hollywood Reporter), Towhy had this to say about the project and its goals:

Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.

The idea of exploring “Riddick’s genesis” is incredibly enticing and the further expansion of this universe is something that could honestly lead to even more movies, animated productions, and video games.

There has been no word on when we can expect the first Riddick: Furya trailer, but with production now in the works (more on that later), it should be more “sooner” than “later” in this case. However, it seems unlikely we’ll see anything within the next few months.

Production on Riddick: Furya Started In August 2024

After teasing Riddick: Furya for the better part of the past decade, Vin Diesel announced in August 2024 that production had finally gotten started on the long-in-the-works project. A few months after Deadline reported cameras would start rolling in summer 2024, the Fast & Furious franchise star took to Instagram to share an image of himself dressed as Richard B. Riddick (signature shades and all) standing in front of a mountain in the desert. Attached to the image was a caption reading, “Furyan Friday.”

A few days later, Diesel posted another image, again on Instagram, of him behind the wheel of a dune buggy while someone sat beside him with a massive camera rig. And while we still don’t who’ll be appearing alongside the film’s star, at least the project is finally getting off the ground after years of development.
