In addition to their multidisciplinary curriculum, the finest liberal arts universities feature lower student numbers. Compared to other universities, class numbers are modest and faculty prioritize teaching over research. Liberal arts institutions are private, non-profit colleges that charge the same tuition to in-state and out-of-state students, unlike public universities. The highest undergraduate tuition at a liberal arts institution is little under $50,000.

1. Northwestern U
Northwestern institution is an Evanston, Illinois, private research institution. It began in 1855 with two faculty and 10 pupils. They were all males, but women were admitted in 1869.
