Weeks after Henry Cavill’s Highlander received a release update, the upcoming remake gets more good news as development ramps up. A new report confirms that principal photography on the long-gestating Lionsgate reboot isn’t too far away.

The Highlander remake begins filming in Scotland in late September to early October, a significant step for a film that has been in the works since Cavill was originally attached to it in 2021. This news comes after director Chad Stahelski, known for helming several installments of the John Wick franchise, recently confirmed that the Highlander remake is set to be released in either 2027 or 2028.

Henry Cavill believes the upcoming Highlander reboot film will exceed expectations as he and helmer Chad Stahelski continue to develop the project.

The Highlander Reboot Gets Rolling Nearly Four Decades After the Original

Cavill and Stahelski are set to bring their take on the Highlander franchise in front of the cameras 39 years after the original version of the fantasy action-adventure blockbuster premiered. Starring Christopher Lambert as Scottish warrior and 16th-century immortal Connor MacLeod, who lives and works as an antique dealer under an alias in New York City. Highlander climaxes a long-running war between immortal warriors, shown through interwoven old-age and present-day storylines. Though Highlander underwhelmed critically and commercially, it was reappraised and appreciated over time, becoming a cult classic and spawning several sequels and the award-winning titular TV series which gained popularity in the ’90s.

The Highlander remake will see Cavill suit up as Connor, mirroring what he did during his time as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher. The upcoming reboot, which moved forward at Lionsgate in 2023, will “go deeper” than the original, according to Cavill, suggesting the film explores more of his central character and possesses more emotional beats audiences can sink their teeth into.

Cavill is the only confirmed cast member for the Highlander reboot, though it’s been rumored that Michael Fassbender could portray the movie’s main antagonist. Furthermore, WWE superstar and Scotland native Drew McIntyre has expressed interest in starring in the remake.

The Highlander reboot is one of multiple projects on the docket for Cavill and Stahelski. Cavill recently wrapped filming for his Voltron live-action film and is working on his Warhammer 40,000 series adaptation at Amazon. Meanwhile, Stahelski is set to helm the recently announced John Wick 5 at Lionsgate, though he will focus on other commitments before stepping back in the helm for the neo-noir action sequel alongside star Keanu Reeves.

Until the remake comes out, fans can watch the original Highlander by renting or purchasing it via Apple TV or YouTube.
