It’s beginning to look like Fast & Furious 11 won’t be the direct sequel to Fast X it was originally envisioned to be. A new update on the hotly-anticipated sequel has just been shared by Vin Diesel.
The actor, who portrays franchise lead Dominic Toretto in The Fast Saga, took to Instagram to wish his followers a “Happy Thanksgiving” and to offer an update on Fast 11. The post featured a behind-the-scenes image from Fast Five of Diesel and Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs) and a caption that revealed that there are a lot of differing opinions about what Fast 11 needs to be. “I got universal in one ear saying we need [Fast X: Part 2] by March 2026! I have Comcast in the other ear saying we need two movies to be the Finale!” the caption reads, suggesting that Universal wants Fast 11 in theaters in March 2026 at the latest, while parent company Comcast apparently wants the two-part finale that Diesel teased back in May 2023.

The Instagram caption also teased that Diesel wants to take Fast 11 back to basics and away from the effects-heavy action sequences that were in the last few Fast & Furious movies. “Then the writer on Fast Five sent me this image and said we need to see DOM and HOBBS resolve their differences. I just want to get back to real street racing, practical stunts… and a reunion of that beautiful brotherhood,” the caption concluded.
Diesel’s Instagram post seems to confirm a report that was shared by insider Jeff Sneider in January 2024 that claimed that Universal was reportedly reworking Fast 11 to be more of a throwback to the franchise’s earlier street racing days. The “lean and mean” Fast 11 would have a smaller budget (no larger than $200M) and be more of a “back-to-basics” sequel revolving around “one last job.” It was also stated that Jason Momoa’s Fast X villain may not return for Fast 11, at least as the primary antagonist, with a new villain expected to be introduced.

What’s Happening with Dwayne Johnson’s Fast X Spinoff Movie?
If Comcast has its way and Fast 11 is split into another two-parter, it would allow for Fast 11 to conclude the storyline that began in Fast X with Momoa’s Dante Reyes, while allowing Fast 12 to serve as a finale that brings the story back to street racing. There’s also the matter of the previously announced Hobbs-centric Fast X spinoff that is expected to feature Johnson’s Luke Hobbs going up against Momoa’s Dante Reyes, a face-off that was set up in the Fast X post-credits scene.
When Johnson announced the movie in June 2023, he revealed that it would act as a bridging chapter between Fast X and Fast 11, similar to how DC Studios’ The Penguin picked up after the events of The Batman and teed up The Batman Part II. However, with Fast 11 director Louis Leterrier recently sharing that the movie will begin production in early 2025, it’s unclear whether Johnson’s Fast X spinoff has been scrapped and folded back into Fast 11. If production does begin in 2025, fans should receive some answers soon enough.
The untitled Fast & Furious 11 is expected to open in theaters in 2026.
